Finance Newsletter – Spring/Summer 2024
For the first time since the CFA Institute Research Challenge (CFA-IRC) launched in 2006, The University of Texas at Dallas hosted the CFA-IRC North Texas/South Texas Research Challenge finals at the Jindal School. This Feb. 24 event brought together the top 10 teams from universities across Texas and more than 70 volunteers from the local CFA societies who acted as mentors and judges for the student teams. Our UTD CFA-IRC team was one of the finalists.
Finance Newsletter – Winter 2023-24
Just over a month ago, we successfully held our sixth UT Dallas Finance Conference with about 70 researchers from many top universities presenting their frontier research about various issues interesting to both academia and practitioners. These included the efficiency of remote work for executives, whether the central bank should bail out uninsured deposits, ChatGPT and corporate policies. Our annual finance conference continues to attract significant attention and greatly increases the visibility and reputation of UT Dallas and the Jindal School.

This fall, for the first time, enrollment at the Naveen Jindal School of Management surpassed 10,000. New enrollment in the MS Finance program also has returned to normal. Our Graduate Financial Management Council (GFMC) organized a very successful second MS Finance Alumni Networking Event with participation from more than 80 current students and alumni. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to make connections and learn from our alumni about building a successful career. It also was a excellent time for GFMC members to showcase their leadership and organizational skills.

Our school has been fully back to regular teaching, studying and researching since late August. Under close monitoring of the COVID-19 situation, everything is going smoothly. New student enrollment increased by more than 120% this fall. Here, they receive the best finance education to pursue their desired careers in the financial industry or to pursue more advanced study in finance.

I would like to begin by congratulating all our May 2021 graduates from the Finance and Managerial Economics Area for successful completion of their degree programs. They overcame a challenging situation during the pandemic and accomplished an important milestone. We are all excited and looking forward to the resumption of back-to-normal life and in-person teaching starting this fall.

Course registration for spring 2021 began Monday, Nov. 2. As in the fall semester, the University will have a hybrid instructional model with five teaching modalities and the asynchronous option for spring 2021. However, the University plans to increase opportunities to help students connect face to face in small groups during the spring. Read more about the plans for spring on the UT Dallas News Center.

I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many people. However, we at UT Dallas are prepared to deal with this situation. To protect our students and faculty, we have moved in-person classes to online teaching via Blackboard Collaborate. While it is a learning experience for us all, so far everything is going smoothly. We are optimistic that we will resume normal activities in the near future.

Our Finance Area successfully hosted the third UT Dallas Fall Finance Conference last October. More than 70 participants joined us at this two-day highly selective conference. Presenters and discussants joined us from Washington University in St. Louis, the University of North Carolina, Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Minnesota, among others.

Hello from the Finance and Managerial Economics Area at the UT Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management! I am stepping in to send greetings on behalf of Dr. Harold Zhang, our area coordinator, who is currently teaching abroad. Dr. Zhang will be back in the fall. In the meantime, I wanted to share some updates for the undergraduate finance program.
The Bachelor of Science in Finance program has continued to grow, both in enrollment as well as in the number of students doing internships. The program enrollment has grown to more than 900 students, making finance the largest undergraduate major in JSOM as of fall 2018.

The Finance and Managerial Economics Area at the Naveen Jindal School of Management keeps growing! We welcomed almost 230 new undergraduate students to our BS in Finance program and about 120 new graduate students to our MS in Finance and MS in Financial Engineering and Risk Management programs. The 13-month MS in Finance Cohort program experienced a 50 percent increase in enrollment with students from China, India, Kuwait and the United States. Our finance faculty remains very productive in research.

There have been several exciting new developments in the Finance Area in the Naveen Jindal School of Management in the 2017-2018 academic year. Our MS in Finance programs have received the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) designation approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which recognizes the quality and rigor of the programs.
