SIOR real estate industry association awarded Weitzman Institute for Real Estate graduate student Alejandro Jimenez a $2,000 scholarship.
Alejandro earned his undergraduate degree and concentration in real estate investment management from UTD. He is a two term Real Estate Club at UTD President both as an undergraduate and graduate student.

Students dedicated an entire Saturday to learning the ARGUS cash flow analysis software. The workshop was taught by Professor Lynch and raised $1,200 for the club. Each of student earned a certificate of completion and the ability to add this important skill to their resume.

The CREW panel discussion provided insight on career positions within the commercial real estate industry which included acquisitions, dispositions, investment sales, tenant and landlord brokerage representation, financial analyst in capital markets and commercial real estate lending. Each of the panelists provided mini-case examples for the roles they contributed in a real estate transaction as well as what they really like about their career in the industry.

The spring Coffee Talks focused on preparing undergraduate and graduate students for their job search for positions in the real estate industry and provided an informal setting to allow students to network. Professor Lynch lead the hands-on session on how to develop a resume targeted to the real estate industry.

The two-hour JSOM Student Organization Fair provided an opportunity for students to learn about the Weitzman Institute for Real Estate and the Real Estate Club at UTD. The event was a success with twenty-six (26) students joining the Club.

The Real Estate Club at UTD Board shared with students the mission of the club and benefits they have derived from being a club member which included learning more about the industry, meeting and starting to build their network of industry professionals, forging peer-to-peer relationships, scholarship opportunities and more. The Board also revealed the spring 2023 events and activities they developed as a result of their three strategic planning meetings during the winter break.

The breakfast provided an exceptional opportunity for students to network among the real estate professionals and government official guests. In November the Real Estate Club (REC) received twenty-seven applications for the three open board positions. This is the highest number of applications ever received! For the first time, REC has an equal amount of graduate and undergraduate students on the board. The purpose of the transition meeting is to debrief on the board’s work for the semester, identify best practices, improvement opportunities, to celebrate the successes of the semester and prepare for the incoming board for the three strategic planning meetings held in December and early January. Professor Julie Lynch taught ARGUS to these thirty-six graduate and undergraduate students on Saturday November 6th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop is offered in November and April to help prepare students for internships and permanent jobs. A student shared with Professor Lynch a personal testimonial that because of attending this workshop he performed exceptionally well at his job interview and got the job.

Thirty-four UTD Weitzman Institute for Real Estate students filled every available spot provided by NTCAR plus there was a waiting list of ten additional students. Each student was given the opportunity to shadow a commercial real estate professional within the industry of the student’s choice. Students completed a four-hour job shadowing with a NTCAR professional then attended the NTCAR EXPO to continue to learn about the industry and build their network.

Many real estate companies prefer to hire individuals who have already been trained in ARGUS. With this in mind, the Real Estate Club at UT Dallas offered a training session to their members that is valued at $1,100 for only $50. Professor Julie Lynch walked students through numerous case studies. Students that completed the workshop were able to add this important credential to their resume to help obtain an internship and/or job as a financial analyst.

Arden Pray, a business administration senior with real estate career aspirations, has been recognized by the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network Foundation as one of 25 international collegiate female scholarship recipients. Pray will receive a $5,000 scholarship, an internship and other benefits.

The Herbert D. Weitzman Institute for Real Estate builds upon the Jindal School’s already successful undergraduate and graduate-level programs. The institute will provide resources, such as access to experts in the field who have worked with Herb Weitzman over the past 60 years and more case competition participation — to be expanded regionally and even nationally — further enhancing student experience.
