ITS Newsletter – Summer 2018

Message from the Area Coordinator

happy Information Systems graduate

The Information Systems Area at UT Dallas will start the 2018-19 academic year where the previous one left off — enrollment remains vibrant with each of our three programs expecting to have around 800 students in the fall, while research productivity remains in first position based on publications in Information Systems Research and MIS Quarterly combined (UTD Top 100 Business School Research Rankings™) for the 2016-18 period.

Our course offerings continue to evolve with developing industry needs, and our portfolio of new courses scheduled for fall 2018 includes one on natural language processing (BUAN 6V99 – Special Topics in Business Analytics – Applied Natural Language Processing) and one on the “internet of things” (MIS 6V99 – Special Topics in Management Information Systems – IoT Essentials).

We will welcome six new faculty members — Assistant Professor Yingjie Zhang; Clinical Assistant Professors Sourav Chatterjee and James Scott; Senior Lecturer Naser Islam; and Clinical Associate Professors Hal Lindholm and Ling Ge — in the fall. We also bid farewell to some longtime colleagues — Indranil Bardhan, Kutsal Dogan, Xianjun Geng, Kelly Slaughter and Marjorie Wu — who are moving on to the next phases of their lives. We thank them for their service and wish them luck in their new endeavors.

As the new academic year dawns and we launch new initiatives, we look forward to your continued support.

CoMIS gives future IT leaders the opportunity to test their business acumen, problem-solving, teamwork and presentations skills against their peers in a case competition designed to simulate real-world business conditions. This year, a team of ITS students, Alma Semock, Taha Zar and Rubeena Habibi, advanced to the CoMIS national competition at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The national event included a 24-hour case competition, and educational and networking events with corporate sponsors such as 3M, General Mills and Cargill. Before the team left for the competition, Dr. Kelly Slaughter, the team’s coach, set up practice presentations for the participants with executives from across the DFW area. Check the CoMIS Facebook page for 2019 competition information.

JSOM Pitt Analytics Competition team
Analytics case competition team (from left): Chandrika Bodduru, Dr. Jason Parker, Alma Semock, Sravya Vemulapati and Jaffer Razvi

In this analytics case competition, students were required to use data analytics to solve pressing issues in the retail space and to provide recommendations to a panel of industry judges. Students went through a Preliminary Case Rules competition, which required a three-page report. The report was compared with those from teams across the country, and the UT Dallas team successfully advanced to the next round in Pittsburgh. The team included Chandrika Bodduru, Alma Semock, Sravya Vemulapati and Jaffer Razvi.

For the next round, the team received the topic and data required for the case details 10 days before the competition and had to prepare a 25-minute presentation. Their assignment was to determine how Dick’s Sporting Goods should sort basketballs on a shelf to move product and enhance that business unit. The team had to demonstrate its approach to analytics, and make and defend specific recommendations for the 2018 Holiday Basketball Assortment. Although they did not place in the competition, the students said that it was an unforgettable and invaluable experience from which they gained skills they can use in the future.

Future-Gazing the Focus of AIS Conference

Association for Information Systems Student Chapter logo

The Information Systems Area hosted the 2018 Association for Information Systems “Technologies of Tomorrow” Student Chapter Leadership Conference in April. The three-day conference offered networking opportunities, case competitions, industry and student panels, workshops, industry keynotes and site visits to such companies as State Farm, Toyota and Essilor. Information systems students and faculty from all over the country and one international group from Poland attended, for a total of 245 participants.

An opening social at Southfork Ranch helped students from different schools and backgrounds network.

The next day, the UT Dallas AIS chapter set up many student leadership sessions and workshops to help prepare students for their future endeavors as IT professionals. One session, “NEMO (Never Miss an Opportunity), Medicine for Guaranteed Success,” was headed by Gaurav Shekhar, MS in ITM program manager and a 2016 MS in ITM alumnus. Other leadership sessions focused on using analytics for decision-making, project management, presentation skills and running effective organizations.

The rest of the day was dedicated to four competitions focused on blockchain, software innovation and analytics.

The final day was dedicated to eight workshop sessions organized and prepared by the UT Dallas AIS chapter and Jindal School ITS faculty. Some of these workshops included IT industry trends, blockchain 101, Tableau and data analytics in the insurance industry. A story on the conference can be found on Inside Jindal School.

A major feature and benefit of the MS in Information Technology and Management program at UT Dallas is its internship program. This past spring, 222 MS in ITM students had the opportunity to work on a paid internship and apply some of their classroom learning to projects at corporate firms. Student feedback from these internships was highly positive.

Often, the internship experience is transformational in a student’s educational journey leading to new growth opportunities and offers of full-time employment. As part of the internship program, students are required to post a summary of their experience on LinkedIn. The summaries provide valuable insight into our students’ career efforts and highlight many of their accomplishments. See #UTDMSITM for a detailed look.
