2021
Sustainability as a Solution to Global Business Challenges
In April 2021, the Center, in collaboration with the Global Sustainable Business Initiative (GSBI), launched the first of the Ann and Jack Graves Foundation Conference Series. The first biennial conference was titled: “Sustainability as a Solution to the Business Challenges.” CGB Executive Director Mike Peng and Director Hubert Zydorek, together with Director of SGBI Habte Woldu and two colleagues from Poznan University and Xavier University, co-chaired the conference. Dean Hasan Pirkul and Mayor Paul Voelker provided welcome letters, and Dean Pirkul gave a welcome speech. Keynote speakers were Magali Delmas (UCLA), Peter Greer (Hope International), and Mike Redeker (Ann and Jack Graves Foundation). Panelists include Ron Bose (UT Dallas), Gary Cocke (UT Dallas), John Frey (HPE), Bhusan Joshi (Ericsson), Sarah Easter (Abilene Christian University), Nicole Hugo (Eastern Illinois University), Rajan Kapur (IEEE), Wei-Jen Lee (UT Arlington), Krzysztof Lapinski (EY), Paras Loomba (Global Himalayan Expedition), Tan Moorthy (Infosys), Nikunj Nirmal (Amazon), Noorie Rajvanshi (Siemens), Carolyn Reichert (UT Dallas), Gabriel Shumba (Pfuma Funds), Manish Vyas (Tech Mahindra), Toyah Miller (UT Dallas) and Paul Voelker (Mayor of Richardson). Over 30 academic papers were presented, and 7 full papers were published in the Proceedings with ISSN number. The conference was attended by over 200 students, faculty and business professionals from 13 countries.
Center for Global Business Speaker Series
In April 2021, the Center organized the Joint Academe-Mobility Speaker Series featuring industry leaders discussing the impact of COVID-19 on global talent, mobility and the focus on reopening. CGB Director Hubert Zydorek and Executive Director Mike Peng moderated sessions. Other speakers included, Kathryn Cassidy (AltairGlobal), Adiba Chowdhury (GMC), Ben Cross (GloMo), Horst Gallo (IBM), Kerwin Guillermo (HPE), Mia Huddleston (JP Morgan Chase), Shankar Raman (TowersWillisWatson), Stephanie Scott (KPMG), Peggy Smith (HumanCapital Executive), Alisson Stark (HPE) and Tracy Thompson (KPMG).
In April 2021, the Center, in collaboration with Global Business Organization (GBO), a student organization at UT Dallas, organized an international business competition that allowed students to learn about marketing strategies in India. Over nine teams from UT Dallas and the University of Economics in Katowice (Poland) participated in the competition. The competition was sponsored by Perennials, a Dallas-based company that manufactures high-end rugs and outdoor furniture. $3000 was awarded to the winning teams.
JAM(Joint Academe-Mobility) Week at UT Dallas 2021
In Fall 2021, CGB welcomed new speakers and students teams to participate in our JAM event. Three days of quality webinars culminated in student competition finals. Over 200 students, faculty and corporate partners participated in the event.
2020
Global Strategy and Emerging Markets Conference
In November 2020, the Center, in collaboration with Cornell University, Northeastern University and Simon Fraser University, co-organized The Fifth Annual Global Strategy and Emerging Markets Conference, hosted virtually by Cornell. Executive Director Mike Peng, together with four colleagues from partner schools, co-chaired the conference. Dean Kevin Hallock (Johnson College of Business at Cornell) gave a welcome speech. Keynote speakers were Andrew Karolyi (Cornell University) and Denise Odaro (IFC). Over 150 students, faculty and business professionals attended various conference sessions. UT Dallas was the number one school in sending participants—we beat Cornell 20:19.
Joint Academe-Mobility (JAM) Program for International HR Students
In fall 2020, the Center launched a Joint Academe-Mobility (JAM) Program for International HR students. The JAM event included global mobility webinars and a student competition involving mentors from 13 companies: Aeon, AltairGlobal, BorgWorner, Crown World Mobility, Deloitte, Expedia, Graebel, HPE, Ineo, KPMG, SIRVA, Toyota and Weichert. Over 40 students participated in this program.
In March 2020, the Center organized a virtual Design Thinking workshop led by Douglas Willis, Sr. Principal at Infosys. The workshop was delivered to 20 students from two student organizations: the Society of Sustainable Business and 180 Degree Consulting.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center’s activities had to transition online. The Center was able to bring global leaders to present to JSOM students in a virtual format. In March 2020, Anand Santhanam, head of sales and business development initiatives for Infosys in the Americas for the CME industry, delivered a seminar to our students virtually.
Global Supply Chain Strategy & Risk Management
In February 2020, the Center invited Moises Sepulveda, SVP of Supply Chain at NCH, to present the company’s Global Supply Chain Strategy. Over 60 students and faculty members participated in this event.

In March 2019, over 30 students participated in a CGB book club event and discussed lessons from the book titled “Shoe Dog”.
Tech Mahindra Case Competition “FirstNet, Built with AT&T”
In March 2019, together with Tech Mahindra and AT&T, the Center co-organized a business case competition. The competition attracted over 13 graduate and undergraduate teams with over 50 students that presented solutions to AT&T. Cash awards were given to winners.
Global Strategy & Emerging Markets
In May 2019, the Center, in collaboration with Cornell University, Northeastern University, and the University of Miami, organized The Fourth Annual Global Strategy and Emerging Markets Conference, with the theme: “Institutional Complexities and Strategic Responses in The New Global Economy.” CGB Executive Director Mike Peng and Director Hubert Zydorek, together with three colleagues (one each from each partner school), co-chaired the conference. Keynote speakers were David Ahlstrom (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Mike Hitt (Texas A&M University), Yadong Luo (University of Miami), Mike Redeker (Ann & Jack Graves Foundation), Sheila Puffer (Northeastern University) and Paul Voelker (Mayor of Richardson). Panelists included Douglas George (Consul General of Canada in Dallas), Fernando Marti (Head, ProMexico—Trade and Investment Commission of Mexico, Consulate General of Mexico in Dallas), Javier Mazon (Founder and CEO, Group Lamerica) and Larry Pascal (Chairman, Haynes and Boone). Over 120 students, faculty and business professionals attended various conference sessions. This high-profile event was reported by Inside JSOM on June 6, 2019.
11th Asia Academy of Management Conference
12th Taiwan Academy of Management Conference
Naveen Jindal School of Management and the Center for Global Business contributed to the organization of the Asia Academy of Management in Bali, Indonesia, in the summer of 2019. CGB Executive Director Mike Peng was program chair and in charge of the overall conference. Vice Dean Varghese Jacob was a panelist for the deans’ panel, sharing his thoughts about the future of business schools. OSIM area coordinator Seung Lee chaired the department chairs’ panel, involving four management department chairs who shared their views. CGB Director Hubert Zydorek attended an AACSB training workshop and chaired two sessions. Over 300 participants attended the conference.

2018 – The Naveen Jindal Institute for Indo-American Business Studies
Center Executive Director Mike Peng recognized among the top 101 most highly cited scholars in the broad field of economics and business worldwide (In this field, Dr. Peng is the only faculty member from the entire UT System who made the list).
The U.S., India and Israel – A Triliberate Trade Conversation
In September 2018, the Center in collaboration with the Naveen Jindal Institute for Indo-American Business Studies, India-US Chamber of Commerce and American Jewish Committee (Dallas) hosted Consuls General of Israel and India. The event was attended by over 100 faculty, students, industry and community members and resulted in discussions about trade and economic relations between the three countries.
Africa Leadership Workshop – Ethics
In October 2018, the Center organized a leadership workshop for African leaders from Kenya and Uganda. The topics discussed included corruption and ethics. UTD faculty members, Richards Bowen, Habte Woldu and Hubert Zydorek shared their expertise with the group.
Economic Trends In Africa
In November 2018, over 100 students, faculty and business representatives attended a seminar about economic trends in Africa delivered by Zemedeneh Negatu, CEO of Fairfax Africa Fund; and CGB Advisory Board member.
How to Be Successful in Global Business
In fall 2018, over 80 students, faculty, and business professionals attended the event titled “How to Be successful in Global Business,” with speakers from Essilor, Siemens, and Tech Mahindra.
In fall 2018, CGB Executive Director Mike Peng, in his IMS 6204 Global Business class, ran a case competition for a market entry project co-sponsored by DLA Piper LLP and co-administered Michael Massiatte, attorney at law and CGB Advisory Board member. The competition winners received cash awards for their excellent work.

A panel discussion brought together three global companies that conducted business in India. The companies shared their views on global talent challenges, the service industry in India and IT outsourcing challenges and opportunities. This event took place in collaboration with the US-India Chamber of Commerce. This event was attended by 100+ students, faculty and industry leaders interested in India’s IT industry.
One Belt, One Road: Global Challenges and Opportunities

Monday, February 13, 2018, 4 – 6 p.m.
Dr. Da-Hsuan Feng, special advisor to the rector of the University of Macau and former vice president of research and economic development at UT Dallas, delivered a presentation on China’s One Belt, One Road program. The presentation was attended by more than 100 students, who participated in discussion about China’s role and its international trade routes.

Management Practices in India: Challenges and Opportunities

In April 2017, we had an opportunity to host two marketing professors from Thapar University in India. During their stay at UT Dallas, they delivered a presentation about management practices in India. The session was attended by more than 40 students interested in India’s growing economy. Some of the students who attended the session decided to join the India Summer program.
The Year of India 3C Event
April 21 – 22, 2018, 2:30 – 3:45 p.m.
The Year of India 3C Event, which took place in spring 2017, celebrated the end of India-related activities throughout the 2016-2017 academic year. The event was divided into three parts:
1. Conference on Sustainability, Leadership and Innovation
2. Business Competition – Students were presented with five topics from which they were asked to select one and write a comprehensive case study. The topics were related to business activities of the Jindal Steel and Power. Six teams combining graduate and undergraduate students participated in this competition.
3. Celebration Dinner – More than 300 students, faculty and industry representatives attended the celebration dinner. The keynote speaker was Debjani Biswas, author and change agent. This event took place in collaboration with the US-India Chamber of Commerce.

In October 2017, CGB organized a Global Leadership Workshop for 15 East African government and industry leaders in collaboration with East Africa Chamber of Commerce. Speakers included Mike Peng, Executive Director, CGB; Habte Woldu , Director, Sustainable Global Business Initiative; Hubert Zydorek, Director, CGB; Ben Pettigrew, Advisory Board Member, CGB; Michael Massiatte, Advisory Board Member, CGB. Lasting the entire day, the event was also attended by faculty members as well as students wanting to learn about issues and challenges in Africa.
Business in Africa
In October 2017, CGB, in collaboration with the Global Chamber organized an event devoted to business challenges and opportunities on the continent of Africa. Speakers included Bill Morgan (East Africa Chamber), Zemedeneh Negatu (Fairfax Africa Fund), Laban Opande (Opande Law Firm), and Meredith Wilson (Emergent Risk International) . The event was attended by 140+ students, faculty, and industry representatives.
Poland Conference: The Future of Poland’s Economy
Wednesday, November 1, 2018, 2 – 7 p.m.
In November 2017, CGB organized a 1/2-day conference titled The Future of Poland’s Economy, which aimed at discussing Poland’s economy, business and culture. The speakers included Dr. Aleksander Poniewierski (Senior Partner at EY), Sabina Klimek (Consul – Trade and Investment Section), Dr. Grzegorz Malinowski (Assistant Professor at Kozmminski University), Lukas Grabiec (Assistant General Counsel at GoDaddy), Dr. Jacek Tomkiewicz (Assistant Professor at Kozminski University), and Prof. Grzegorz Kolodko (Director of Research Institute at Kozminski University and Former Deputy Premier of Poland). The conference resulted in promotion of the university to international partners, industry leaders and other academic institutions. In addition, the conference resulted in networking opportunity for students with industry leaders. Over 120 students, faculty and business professionals attend the event.
The Year Of India (AY 2016-2017)
As part of our India Initiative, in collaboration with Neveen Jindal Institute for Indo-American Business Studies, the Center for Global Business organized the Year of India to celebrate India-related activities: They included the following events:
“Doing Business in India” ¬– Neel Gonuguntla (President of US India Chamber of Commerce), Nikunj Nirmal (Vice President Tech Mahindra), Ramesh Balan (CEO of Knomadix). Over 80 students, faculty, and business professionals attended the presentation
- Organized movie showing: “Roughbook” to allow students, faculty, and community to learn about the changing environment of Indian education. Over 60 students, faculty, and business professionals attended the event
- “IT Services and Offshoring to India” ¬– Over 100 students, faculty, and business professionals gathered to discuss the topics. Companies that participated in the panel included Tech Mahindra and NTT Data.
- “Marketing and Social Media in India” and “Selling US Products and Services to India” ¬– Dr. Arunesh Garg Assistant Professor of Marketing Coordinator, Collaboration & Internationalization; and Dr. Karminder Ghuman Head, Centre for Indian Management Area Chair – Marketing & Entrepreneurships, both from LM Thapar School of Management Thapar University Dera Bassi Campus, Punjab, India. Over 40 students, faculty, and business professionals attended the event.
- “Global 3C Event” ¬– The Year of India 3C Event took place just before the end of Spring 17 to celebrate the end of India-related activities throughout the academic year 2016/2017. The event was divided in three parts:

In February 2017, Dr. Da-Hsuan Feng, special Advisor to the Rector of the University of Macau and former Vice President of Research and Economic Development at the University of Texas at Dallas delivered a presentation on China’s One Belt, One Road program. The presentation was attended by over 100 students who participated in discussion about China’s role and its international trade routes.
Emerging European Economies
In March 2017, Dr. Jacek Tomkiewicz, Dean of the College of Finance and Economics at Kozminski University in Warsaw, Poland, discussed opportunities and challenges in emerging European economies. He presented growth and opportunities for growth in smaller central European countries and the factors that contribute to their economies. The presentation was attended by 100+ students, faculty and industry representatives.

Year of Ethiopia Celebration

The Year of Ethiopia concluded with a celebration that brought together UT Dallas faculty, staff and students as well as members of various international institutions.
Poland Day
Friday, November 4, 2018, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The role of Poland Day is to understand Poland’s role in the European Union, economy and trade, business and technology and how students can get involved through internships, study abroad and faulty-led trips.

In October 2016, over 50 students, faculty, and business professionals attended a seminar titled “China’s Evolution of Business: Manufacturing Capabilities, Consumers, and Corruption” delivered by Kim Kirkendall (President, International Resource Development)
OPT and H-1B Information Session
In October 2016, over 80 students, faculty and business professionals attended an information session about OPT and H-1B visas. The presentation was delivered by Rebecca Massiatte (Immigration Attorney).
Celebrate Poland Days @ UT Dallas
In November 2016, CGB Organized a 1-day conference titled Poland Day at UT Dallas, which aimed at discussing Poland’s economy, business and culture. The speakers included Dr. Aleksander Poniewierski (Senior Partner at EY), Sabina Klimek (Consul – Trade and Investment Section), Emil Pietras (Polish representative to the European Union), Lukas Grabiec (Assistant General Counsel at GoDaddy) and Dr. Piotr Moncarz (Faculty- Stanford university and Chairman of US-Polish Trade Council). Over 100 students, faculty, and business and community members attended the conference.
