Want to combine your community engagement with your love for travel?

Everyone’s community looks different. For our students who enjoy travel, we know that their “community” can be very broad! If you’d like to expand your community service outside of the US, you have serval options. From special classes and JGE courses to our partnership with the Global Engagement Institute, you’ll find a variety of options to serve others, complete your graduation requirement, and see the world.

Available international community engagement opportunities include the GEI Global Health Field Course, GEI Women & Leadership Field Course and GEI Social Innovation Lab Field Course

Regional Management Area Studies: Asia- Indonesia. January 4-12, 2020

Program Overview:

This course familiarizes students with the historical, social, economic, and political background of nations in Asia. Students will learn about the business environment of the area and participate in seminars on firms that operate in and have an economic impact in the area. May be repeated as topics vary (2 times maximum). Department consent required. Trip dates: January 4-12, 2020. Application Deadline: 10/15/19.

Students will complete 50 hours of community service toward their JSOM community engagement requirement by working with the local community including high school students and rural economic development.

Social Sector Engagement and Community OutREACH Practicum- Australia. May 8 – June 5, 2020

Program Overview:

This course is designed to further develop a student’s appreciation of the stakeholders in their community through appropriate developmental experiences in a real community engagement. Students are required to complete 100 hours of community service and submit specific verification from the community organization of the hours completed. Instructor consent required. Trip dates: May 8 – June 5, 2020. Application deadline: 10/15/19.

GEI Global Health Field Course

The Global Health field courses introduce concepts of global health from a unique Asian or African perspective. You will learn about the healthcare system in the area and study one major public health concern in particular – infection prevention and control (IPC) in healthcare settings. A week of skills development through classroom learning, workshops, field visits and general cultural immersion is followed by two weeks of service-learning at local hospitals and health centers.

The Global Health field courses are offered in Summer 2020 in 3 countries: Vietnam, Kenya, and Rwanda. All GEI Global Health courses fulfill all 100 hours of Community Engagement required for enrollment in BA 4095. For more information on each program, please visit the links provided.

GEI Women & Leadership Field Course

The 3-week Women & Leadership field course is designed to highlight the crucial role of leadership development in the pursuit of social justice and sustainable development. You will be introduced to the social change model of leadership development and explore key concepts of community leadership. The first week focuses on skills development through classroom learning, workshops, field visits and general cultural immersion. The second and third weeks then consist of the practical application and multiplication of your new skills through service-learning activities with local host organizations.

The Women & Leadership field courses are offered in Summer 2020 in 4 countries: Vietnam, Kenya, South Africa, and Rwanda. All GEI field courses fulfill all 100 hours of Community Engagement required for enrollment in BA 4095. For more information on each program, please visit the links provided.

GEI Social Innovation Lab Field Course

The 3-week Social Innovation Lab field course provides you an opportunity to explore the country’s highly innovative social innovation landscape, and to address social innovation topics in partnership with local entrepreneurs and civil society leaders. Student teams first develop key skills through classroom learning, workshops, field visits and general cultural immersion. You then spend two weeks working in interdisciplinary service-learning teams to address a specific social innovation topic in partnership with local entrepreneurs and civil society leaders.

The Social Innovation Lab field courses are offered in Summer 2020 in 4 countries: Vietnam, Kenya, South Africa, and Rwanda.
