Our Work – SGBI

 SBBI Global Impact Map
The United Nations defined sustainable development in the Brundtland Report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This means that sustainability is critical to our future.

The Sustainable Global Business Initiative supports and manages sustainable activities such as poverty alleviation projects and social entrepreneurship in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and in developing countries. The initiative evaluates the efficiency of development efforts by participating in field services where projects are operational.

SGBI is committed to creating a community of sustainability scholars who will become future leaders as project/program coordinators in the nonprofit sector, business developers, program officers for international organizations, policymakers, researchers, and consultants. SGBI welcomes students who want to engage in sustainability-related research, projects, and activities by participating in a student organization, the Society of Sustainable Business (SSB).

Below is an outline of our work to improve the lives of others across Texas and around the world.

Global Sustainability Experience and Corporate Outreach

The purposes of GSE are to bring more awareness and excitement to the topic of sustainability to campus, partner with industry to discuss sustainability trends, and generate sustainable business ideas among students. It is also an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to network with companies and institutions focused on sustainability.
The GSE at the Naveen Jindal School of Management is a semester long event that included two webinars, two workshops and a student pitch competition — concluded with a celebration on Earth Day.

Global Outreach

SGBI’s mission is to contribute meaningful engagement with the higher education institutions in the African continent. We endeavor to address the needs of marginalized sections of society through social entrepreneurial efforts. This entails the establishment of a consortium uniting African universities and the University of Texas at Dallas. The consortium aims to bring the conference to Africa, with the primary objectives such as pioneering Africa-specific sustainable research, engaging African academic faculty and doctoral students, cultivating collaboration between Western and African business leaders and encouraging exceptional African students to seek scholarships at JSOM, UT Dallas.

Entrepreneurship is one of the main forces to enhance economic development and community welfare. However, many small entrepreneurs in Bonton are experiencing lack of access, resources, and exposure to entrepreneurial information and best practices. This situation hinders their opportunities and efforts to advance their businesses. The Bonton Farms Project aims to cultivate sustainable economic development efforts in the Bonton community, South Dallas, through the empowerment of small local entrepreneurs.
