Economic Updates for Texas Triangle

The Center supports a website which tracks an Index of Financial Performance, and a number of component financial indicators. Collectively, these track the financial performance of all publicly traded corporations headquartered in one of four Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) of Texas. Included companies must have reported data, as required, to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The website is updated quarterly with Indexes of Financial Performance for the DFW MSA, the Houston MSA and the combination of the San Antonio and Austin MSA. information on profitability, sales increases, and return on assets is also reported. The series starts in 2011 and goes to the end of 2017. XBRL became the required reporting language for submissions to the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2009. Many submissions before 2011 are incomplete.

Internship Programs

The Center for Finance Strategy & Innovation is able to offer assistance to corporations with whom we have a cooperation agreement to use student interns attached to the Center. Help is available in the areas of blockchain design and coding, artificial intelligence design and coding, and data analysis.

The interns themselves are graduate students in the Master of Science in Financial Engineering and Risk Management Program or Master of Science in Business Analytics Program and students in the Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. Work arrangements are carried out through appropriate, legal structures.

In return for such assistance, cooperating companies usually provide some financial support to the Center.

Education

Development and Delivery of MBA/MS Courses

Graduate courses have been developed and are delivered in the areas of private equity finance, entrepreneurial finance, turnarounds and restructurings, enterprise transformation and international financial management.

Case Research

Many original case studies have been authored and published by Center leaders. Some have been reprinted. The first of a new series of timely case studies, reflecting the new context of finance, will be released later in 2018. The studies will be useful to both professionals in the field and graduate students.

Future Programs Under Consideration

The Center is investigating the feasibility of a non-degree, shorter program aimed at educating professionals in making the business case for the adoption of emerging digital technologies. The business case includes proof of concept, impact on corporate strategy, implementation plans and valuation. The use of both student interns in the Center and program participants to construct a proof of concept for specific industry groupings is envisaged.

Support for Decision Makers

Public Policy Makers

Through impartial analysis in its area of expertise the Center actively supports improvements in public policy especially through public-private partnerships of different kinds and involving different levels of governments. In the areas of finance, economic development and innovation the Center is able to help frame issues and analyze needs for consideration by policymakers. The Center does not position itself as an active advocate or active promoter of specific courses of action in the public sphere. In recent years, we have partnered with the Texas Legislature, the City of Cedar Hill, and Dallas Arts District.

Enterprise and Corporate Transformation

The Center supports large and small corporations in their transformation endeavors when the opportunity is appropriate. Such support may include diagnosis of needs, design of an integrated business plan for transformation and/or the implementation of the plan. The recent economy continues to produce many such opportunities. Recognizable names with whom we have partnered over the years include JC Penney, Target, Fujitsu, and Tektronix.

Financial Management

For several years, the Center has provided faculty speakers for the Professional Development Program of the Financial Executives International Dallas Chapter.
