Business Educator Alumnus to Speak at Hooding Ceremony

Dr. Deepak C. Jain
Dipak C. Jain

Dipak C. Jain, MS 1986, PhD 1987, immediate past dean of INSEAD, a global business school with campuses in France, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, returns to UT Dallas August 15 to speak at the doctoral hooding ceremony at the Clark Center (1 to 4 p.m.)

At the ceremony, successful PhD candidates receive academic regalia, distinctive in color according to academic disciplines, that recognizes their scholarly achievement. Each graduating student invites a faculty member — usually his or her PhD adviser — to help the dean of Graduate Studies confer the “hood,” attire that dates to the Middle Ages, when most academics were also religious clerics.

A well-regarded teacher and strong academic leader, Jain led INSEAD from 2010 until March of this year. He remains at the school as Chaired Professor of Marketing. He previously served as dean of Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management for eight years, after having joined the faculty in 1986. He was named an SOM Distinguished Alumnus in 2001, and he received the UT Dallas Alumni Achievement Award in 2005.

Jain’s areas of research include the marketing of high-technology products, market segmentation and competitive market-structure analysis, cross-cultural issues and global product diffusion. He has published three books as well as more than 60 articles in leading academic journals.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and statistics in 1976 and a master’s degree in mathematical statistics in 1978 from Gauhati University in India. He taught at Gauhati for the next five years before going to the United States pursue his PhD at UT Dallas.
