Assortment and Pricing Strategy for a Sustainability-driven Start-up

This competition is for undergraduate students only.

The SCM problem for the Spring 2024 competition centers on the assortment and pricing strategy for a food retailer, Pulp Pantry (www.pulppantry.com). The main question will be to do a market study of products similar to the line of healthy, sustainably-produced snacks that Pulp Pantry sells. Questions which are of most interest here are how to select the size of the bags, design variety packs and bundle packs and how to set prices. The teams would be asked to look at what already is sold by the company, analyze production and shipping cost information which will be provided by Pulp Pantry and propose a product and pricing strategy based on their findings.

Kaitlin Mogentale is the founder of Pulp Pantry, a sustainable food company that transforms upcycled ingredients like juice pulp into vegetable-based, fiber-rich upgrades of junk food favorites, like chips. She’s a self-proclaimed food waste warrior and deeply passionate about the impact that food has on personal health and wellbeing, as well as sustainability and global economies. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in Environmental Studies, starting her company shortly after graduating and running it successfully.

We expect that all the participants constitute their teams on their own. However, we would try our best to find teammates for you after the registration deadline if you need help and it depends on whether there are other individuals looking for teammates. Please make sure you complete the registration.

Participants must be currently enrolled in JSOM in an undergraduate degree. Students outside JSOM are welcome as well.

Yes, the case has been written for any business major. If you are a student from another school at UTD, you may want to team up with a JSOM student.

Yes. Every participant, even an individual who is looking for teammates, has to register. Registration should be completed by the team’s captain and include all team member’s information. The team captains email address and phone numbers will serve as the main point of communication throughout the competition.

The prize money is awarded to the whole team.

Before submission, your timing for working on the case is flexible depending on the schedule of yourself and teammates. If your team becomes one of the finalists, it is not required that every teammate must be a part of the presentation but there has to be a valid proof for reason of absence. You cannot substitute someone else in place of you even if you are absent with a proof of valid reason.

Yes, the competition is free.
