Summer Experiences Abroad

Students often find summer the most convenient time to go abroad. If you are interested in spending your summer break in another country, the first thing you have to ask yourself is if you want to study abroad or work abroad.

If you want to spend your summer earning course credit, start by looking for a third-party program. This could mean studying at a foreign university that we do not yet have an agreement with or going through a study-abroad company. To find a list of companies that are study-abroad providers, email or visit the Comets Abroad Portal.

In order to receive credit for courses abroad, students should apply on the Comets Abroad Portal. From there, they will find all the paperwork required to get coursework pre-approved for transfer credit.

Working abroad is a great way to learn about business practices in another country and gain a deeper understanding of how globalization is developing in the business world. This is especially strategic for JSOM students, who can gain international experience and fulfill their internship requirement at the same time.

There are many ways to find an international internship. Some students use their personal connections. Others find positions listed on Handshake. Still others utilize internship-placement companies. It is important to remember though, that because of visa requirements, international internships are often unpaid positions.

When you use an internship-placement company, you pay a company a fee, and it finds you an internship in your field of study. Often these companies help students obtain their visas, find a place to live, find transportation to/from the airport, and more. Many of our students have used companies like The Intern Group in the past. To see a list of placement companies that JSOM students have used in the past, contact or use our internship interest form and we’ll contact you.

Once you are hired for an international internship, don’t forget to report it on Handshake and the Comets Abroad Portal!
