Academic Calendar

The UT Dallas Academic Calendar is the list of official dates for the University, including all deadlines. Take note of important dates to avoid late fees, missing the deadline to graduate, and more.

Required Classes

The catalog is the official list of required classes. It reflects current academic policies, procedures, degree offerings, course descriptions and other pertinent information. Your catalog typically corresponds to the academic year in which you started classes at UT Dallas.

Previous Catalogs for undergraduate Healthcare Management

Ask Advising if you are not sure what your catalog is, or if you are double majoring.

Fast Track

Fast Track is a way to take graduate classes that count for both your undergraduate and graduate requirements (kind of like Advanced Placement credit in high school). Even if you are not ready for graduate school, Fast Track is another way to set yourself apart from other job seekers. Click here [[Fast Track doc]] for specific information about the Fast Track into the master’s degree program in Healthcare Leadership and Management. Talk to Advising if you are interested.

Getting involved on campus makes your time at UT Dallas both more valuable and more fun. Check out the suggestions below to get started.

Healthcare Management Association

Join the UT Dallas Healthcare Management Association. One-time dues of $25 give you access to events with industry professionals, job and internship postings, and ways to connect with your classmates. HMA also sends out a weekly email that includes internship and job openings. (If you cannot afford the dues, let us know.)

Events

UT Dallas, JSOM, the Career Management Center, the Center for Healthcare Leadership and Management, and Healthcare Management programs host events constantly. Take advantage of them! Talk to the speakers and ask for their business cards. If you’re nervous, take a friend with you. The best jobs go to people who know people.

Getting involved in the community dramatically improves your chances for getting hired quickly. Recommendations compiled from alumni, faculty and employers follow.

Volunteering

Every BS in Healthcare Management major should get some experience in the healthcare industry. If you do not have any experience, you should volunteer. Hospitals and clinics are often convenient places to start looking.

Shadowing

Shadowing is another way to understand the industry. Ask around to see if you know someone who works in healthcare and would let you follow them around at work for a day. If you do not know anyone, call the HR department of companies and ask if they have opportunities for shadowing.

Professional Organizations

Get a student membership to local chapters of professional organizations. We recommend the following. Also, keep an eye out for UT Dallas-sponsored scholarships!

While some internships are posted on company websites, you should not limit your search to them. Ask people you met when you volunteered or job-shadowed. Pitch your own internship. Regularly check Handshake. Reach out to people you met at Healthcare Management Association or other events. There are opportunities out there, but you have to look for them!

If you want to use your job as your internship, contact us to work out the details.

To get 2 credit hours for your internship, you must complete 160 hours within one semester. For 3 credits, you must complete 240 hours within one semester. In rare cases, you can get a zero-credit internship, which allows you to complete the internship requirement without paying tuition.

Once you receive an internship offer, you must get it approved on Handshake. Watch the video on the JSOM Internships page for instructions. You will be required to upload several documents for approval; find out more information under the “Reporting & Timelines” section of the JSOM Internship page.
