Whether he is assisting an international client or providing advice to a promising student, he regularly shares his extensive industry knowledge. He also routinely uses the skills he developed while earning his undergraduate degree and an MBA from the Jindal School.

Scott Birnbaum, BS’84

Founder And President, Reclaimed Textiles Co.

Scott Birnbaum, a former CPA, founded a business that recycles items otherwise destined for the garbage heap. He established Reclaimed Textiles Co. (RTCM), which repurposes discarded textiles for new use. As president, he is active in all aspects of the company and constantly relies on skills learned while a student at the Jindal School. In addition to his 18 years in textile recycling, he has experience in defense manufacturing, transportation and publishing. Scott established RTCM based on his values regarding quality, innovation and customer focus, and he is committed to developing new means to repurpose used goods in the U.S. and in developing countries.

McCure, who earned her master’s degree in Healthcare Management, is part of a team managing Southwestern Health Resources’ preferred network of physicians and specialists. In addition, she’s working on an initiative to improve communication between Texas Health Physician’s Group and Texas Health Behavioral Health Help Line.

Farhad Rizvi, BS’11

Farhad Rizvi had a vision of combining commerce and philanthropy into one business strategy. Along with his older brother, Hammad, he created Shamak Sandals, a company that sells leather sandals handcrafted in the Middle East. But Shamak Sandals reaches beyond shoe sales.

Moti knows the value of education – he holds four degrees, including two from Jindal School of Management – an MS/Healthcare Management and an MBA. His other two degrees – a BS/Economics from Texas A&M University and master’s in Public Health from University of Illinois at Chicago – will grow to three when he completes his doctorate in Healthcare Administration at Medical University of South Carolina.

Hoang, who graduated cum laude with a Business Administration degree, says her degree gave her the knowledge, resources and connections to help people with their financial planning needs. “It helped me build character, business acumen and find the passion for what I do now,” she says. She says she is proud her work will impact families and businesses now “and last … on into the following generations.” She was recently selected as one of 60 representatives nationwide to attend a special fast-track program for young advisers in Milwaukee. Today she continues to seek their feedback, as her Jindal School education remains relevant in her real estate career and the business world.

Philips, and his friend Nick Shifflett, started Shifflett & Philips accounting firm in 2014 in Frisco. Philips, a CPA, had worked at other accountancies for more than nine years before going out on his own. His practice now primarily focuses on the performance of federal and state tax compliance and consulting with individuals, estates, partnerships and closely held corporations. Philips holds two Jindal School degrees – a bachelor’s in Business Administration, which he completed in 2005, and an MS/Accounting which he completed in 2009.

Wallace, who earned her MBA and master’s degree in Healthcare Management at Jindal School, assists with all aspects of operations at Parkland’s Southeast Dallas Health Center, including administrative, business and clinical, in addition to the design of work processes, prioritization of initiatives and clinic performance improvement projects. She’s been at Parkland for almost four years.

Cedeno started his career with Parallon in January 2022 as part of Parallon’s Manager In Training program where he served at Medical City Dallas, Medical City Heart and Spine, and Medical City Arlington. Cedeno received a recent promotion to Assistant Market Director for Patient Access where he continues to drive exceptional operational performance and deliver team engagement. During his tenure with Parallon, Cedeno has been involved with many projects and has been instrumental in Medical City Dallas’s top tier performance. Cedeno graduated from The University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Management in 2021 and his Master’s degree in 2023 as part of the Healthcare Leadership and Management program.

Fall 2023 Internship with Heart to Heart Hospice

During this past fall semester, I had the opportunity to work at Heart to Heart Hospice as an administration intern. I learned about building patient relationships, time management, and the inner workings of a hospice. Overall, I gained a lot of experience in the field and had the pleasure of working one-on-one with a mentor. My mentor was incredibly helpful in pointing out resources to aid me during the internship and offered critical advice for me to use. This experience has taught me how to adapt to different situations and communicate effectively.

This past semester, I had the incredible opportunity to work at Foundation Pain and Spine (FPS) as a medical assistant for Dr. Thompson. During this internship, I gained invaluable experience in both patient care and medical procedures. My responsibilities included a mix of clinical and administrative tasks such as collecting patient vitals, scheduling, sterilizing procedure instruments, and completing insurance claims. Being able to work directly with patients and providers reignited my interest in the healthcare industry.

Today was a long and eventful day. We took three flights to get to Osaka, and a bus ride to get to Nara. I have been up for about two days straight, considering we crossed the International Date Line. Our first flight was through United Airlines, and we had a 5-hour layover in Houston. While in Houston, I grabbed some coffee at the airport Starbucks and book by Neil Gaiman entitled American Gods. During the layover, I tried to close my eyes for a bit and watch some Netflix using the free Wi-Fi. During the 13-hour flight to Narita Airport in Tokyo, I spent a great deal of time reading about half of the book I purchased in Houston. My classmate and I were uncertain about the video on demand service, and thought the inflight videos cost money due to the credit card reader on the side of the remote, so we decided not to even bother with extra cost. My international internship in London this year has been the most enjoyable and educational summer yet. On its own, two months in London itself is amazing. But I had the opportunity to work with some of the best people I possibly could. They helped me realize my potential as an individual in the workplace and out. For me, this was my first experience in a workplace that trusted me enough to let me learn by doing. Every time I was assigned a task, whoever was responsible for the task would patiently explain what they wanted done, how to do it, and why they do it that way. Fall 2023 Internship with Cubic Care Family Medicine

At Cubic Care Family Medicine, I have an opportunity to work alongside a physician on a quality improvement project. Using the “Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycle” to address blood pressure control in hypertensive patients. The approach involved effective communication, careful planning, collecting the right data from the EMR system, and targeted intervention for patients with uncontrolled blood pressure.
