GLEMBA Newsletter - July 2014
Greetings Global Leadership EMBA Alumni!
It’s been a busy two months since the last newsletter.
Please join me in welcoming Jeanette Henriques, our new classroom coordinator for both executive MBA programs. Jeanette brings 18 years of experience from the University of North Texas and is responsible for the administrative functions of both executive MBA programs. We’re very happy she is on our team.
The GL14 class graduated on Saturday, May 17. Prior to the ceremony we had a reception in the JSOM executive dining room with family and friends attending. Here are the 2014 May graduates:
Patrick Cochran
Jaime Costa
Yessica Hinklin
Rohit Kunjappa
Aline Lourenco
David Owuori

Dr. Padmakumar Nair was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award by the Executive MBA Class of 2014. He taught organizational behavior to the Class of 2014 during their first semester. Since then, he has moved to Punjab, India, to serve as the director of the L.M. Thapar School of Management. He was presented his award on May 31 at an EMBA/GLEMBA networking event while he was visiting the U.S.
Have you read the latest issue of MANAGEMENT magazine? There is an article featuring the new GLEMBA leaders, Pamela Foster Brady and Dr. David Springate, on page 27. Aline Lourenco (GL’14), Yessica Hinklin (GL’14) and Tyler Berns (EMBA 2015) are pictured on page 33. Also featured in the Alumni Notes are Peter Balyta (GL’03), and Richard Peck (GL’04) on page 35. View the issue online.
In the May 2014 issue of Foreign Policy, there is a section on Global Business Education that features the UT Dallas GLEMBA program. Alumnus Todd Zavodnick (GL’06) is quoted in the article (pages 3 and 4).

Annual Executive Education Holiday Party – December 5
This year we will be at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch – a new venue. Mark your calendars now. Details to follow.
Earlier this month, I was fortunate to join Dr. James Szot, program director for the Project Management certificate and MBA program; Debbie Samac, program manager for the same program; Jerry Hoag, associate dean of Executive Education; and the MBA students from Jiao Tong University in Shanghai for a tour of the interior of the school’s new addition.
View of the new addition looking from the southwest (Parking Lot M West) to the northeast. The external walls are up, and the contractor is working on the mechanical and electrical finish-outs.

The building is in the finishing stages with the contractor working on electrical and telecommunications, painting, floor finishing and more. This is the view from the south-side entrance looking north.

Education.
Dr. Springate is the founder of the executive MBA programs and is currently serving as the academic director for both. He holds a PhD in corporate Finance from the Harvard Business School. He is the co-founder and director of the Center for Finance Strategy Innovation at UT Dallas, and he is past chapter president and now board member of Financial Executives International.
I find myself this weekend in Hong Kong leading a Global Leadership Executive MBA study tour to Hong Kong and other stops in mainland China. It occurs to me that this city, to which the Executive MBA program has come five times in the last 20 years for its own study tours, is one of the world’s most obvious examples of how fast and how substantively our world is changing. This city is first a prime example of how many businesses now operate on a global basis and no longer a regional one. Hong Kong today is focused on the global flow of financial capital, manufactured goods distribution and people. In 60 years Hong Kong has morphed from a westernized outpost on the edge of China to a regional manufacturing center and then into one of the major business hubs and roundtables of the world. It has major capital markets, major transportation/distribution facilities, and it is a leading headquarters city in Asia.
Secondly, the city is also a prime example of the rapid political and economic realignment occurring in our world. The colonial past is gone. Hong Kong today is more significant because it operates in China’s orbit. Without the rise of mainland China, its manufacturing capacity and its economic strength, Hong Kong would not have thrived the way it has. Other realignments are occurring, of course, even as adaption to the strength, possibilities and demands of China continues in many places and on many fronts. But to the point, Hong Kong is a visible example of ongoing changes and realignments in the world order.
As a third consideration, Hong Kong reminds us that horizons, travel arrangements and communications expectations in Texas are also changing rapidly. Hong Kong is no longer exotic for us. We can fly directly to the city from the DFW airport. Internet and smart devices provide for instantaneous and cost-effective communications with cities on the other side of the world. Commuting to Hong Kong and working from it are easier in some respects than doing the same to and from certain areas of Texas.
