Tell us the highlights of your professional career. What are your proudest achievements?
I’ve had the benefit of working in several roles within several industries, with no regrets. But my current role is by far my favorite. I’ve finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up! As the first home-grown female agent of color to be promoted to partner within my local firm, I’m making history. It’s a huge honor, one which affords me the opportunity to directly impact the lives and legacies of hundreds across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Beyond that, my position will hopefully give a young girl or boy one more possibility on their list of things to strive for. #ilovemyjob
What brought you to UT Dallas?
At the time, graduate school seemed like a necessity. My undergrad IT degree had deflated along with the dot-com bubble. However, grad school had to make sense. I researched programs for a solid year, and visited the UT Dallas campus at least three times before deciding that this university had the best combination of degree options, academic reputation and economic value for my lifestyle. I loved the diversity that the campus offered, as well as the realistic course-load for a nontraditional student such as myself. My decision to attend here was one of the best I’ve ever made. The friendships and professional alliances that began during my student years have proved priceless!
What is your favorite UT Dallas memory?
For me, my commencement was my favorite. I know how it sounds – that I couldn’t wait to get out of there, but no. It was truly such a moment of celebration. I completed my program after just 18 months, while working full-time, so it was a big deal. Not to mention, I had several friends who also completed degrees that day so it was a very joyous occasion!
Who was your favorite professor and/or what was your favorite class and why?
I don’t remember the professors, honestly, but I thoroughly enjoyed my major course work. My favorite component was the group project approach. I learned so much from my team members over the semesters, and many are mentors, of sorts, even today.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Spending time with family, giving back to the community, creating anything cheesy in the kitchen, and dancing — to work off the cheese, of course.
What advice do you have for current students hoping to succeed in the business world?
Be flexible and learn to control the controllable. Things change. Get over it.
What makes an effective leader?
Leadership is about action. It requires commitment, strong communication and choosing to develop strengths vs. dwelling on the weaknesses of others. Ultimately, for me, it’s about being a humble servant of others.
