What brought you to UT Dallas?

Convenient location to my work and home, and the impressive reputation of the School of Management. Also, strong recommendations of friends and co-workers who were already attending UTD.

What is your favorite UT Dallas memory?

I most enjoyed working in group projects with new people who are now still my personal friends and/or an important part of my professional network. I also really enjoyed being on campus while the School of Management facility was built. It was an exciting to begin my degree in portable buildings and finish in the new building in my last semester.

Who was your favorite professor and/or what was your favorite class and why?

My favorite professor was because of a great class — Dr. Laurie Ziegler — Conflict and Negotiation in Organizations. This course was very applicable to me personally and professionally, and I still continue to use my learning from this class on a regular basis. The activities and projects were interactive and reinforced the course content, and Dr. Ziegler’s lectures were interesting and memorable.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Community service, outdoor activities, travel, and spending time with my family and friends.

What advice do you have for current students hoping to succeed in the business world?

Determine how you can distinguish yourself from others with a similar education or experience. Define your unique value proposition and articulate it well.Ensure you have the emotional maturity to behave professionally and work well with others who may have a challenging or different interpersonal style.Find a mentor who can be a safe sounding board throughout your career for advice and alternative thinking.Establish an ultimate career goal and map out the roles and experiences needed to get there. Stick with it and adjust it along the way as you have more clarity and insight on your interests and plans. As opportunities come your way, determine if they are aligned with your goal and how they will benefit you.

What makes an effective leader?

An individual who can articulate a compelling vision and rally others to enthusiastically support it. Also, one who uses both creativity and strategy to achieve business results, while investing in personal relationships and building a collaborative team with diverse strengths.
