Executive MBA Faculty
UT Dallas has an internationally renowned faculty committed to teaching in the Executive MBA program. Faculty members chosen to teach in the program are leading scholars, and many are consultants in their areas of expertise. Several of the faculty are editors or serve as editorial board members of professional and academic journals. Faculty from other areas in the university and adjunct professors also teach in the program.
David Springate, PhD
Academic Director, Executive MBA Program
David Springate is the founding director of the Executive MBA Program at UT Dallas and currently serves in the role of Academic Director. He holds a Ph.D. in Corporate Finance from the Harvard Business School. His research papers have appeared on many reputable academic journals and he authored 28 teaching cases that have been published through Harvard’s Intercollegiate Case Clearing House, many of which have been reprinted in textbooks. He has testified before a committee of the Canadian Parliament.
He was a chief executive of the investment subsidiary of a multi-billion dollar financial institution, manager for a listed Swiss investment company, and chairman of a luxury automobile dealership. His teaching interests include private equity finance, turnarounds and restructurings, and the finance of innovation. He has previously served as Associate Dean for Executive Education at UT Dallas and as a professor at IMD in Switzerland, SMU and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
He is the co-founder and director of the Center for Finance Strategy Innovation at UT Dallas, and is past chapter president and now board member of Financial Executives International. He has delivered approximately160 short seminars and custom programs for executive groups and corporations.
Ashiq Ali, PhD
Ashiq Ali is Charles and Nancy Davidson Chair in Accounting at the Naveen Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to his appointment at UT Dallas in 2004, he was Professor and Eller Fellow at the Eller College of Management, University of Arizona. From 1988 to 1995, he taught in the MBA programs at the Stern School of Business, New York University and Columbia Business School. He currently teaches Financial Accounting to MBA and Ph.D. students and has earned the Executive MBA Distinguished Faculty Award.
Ashiq Ali earned his Bachelor of Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York. . His research examines the role of financial accounting information in the capital markets. He has studied the relation between accounting numbers and stock prices, biases in accounting numbers due to managerial incentives, the effectiveness of legal regimes in preventing managers from misreporting accounting data, the process of dissemination of accounting information to the financial markets, the efficiency with which stock market utilizes accounting and non-accounting information, and the factors that prevent stock price from reflecting the underlying value of the firm. His research has been published in top tier accounting and finance journals, namely, The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies. He has also been on the editorial board of The Accounting Review for several years
Gary E Bolton, PhD
Negotiation and Dispute Resolution
Gary Bolton teaches a class focused on negotiation skills. Gary the O.P. Jindal Chair Professor of Management Economics at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. He has taught classes in negotiation to MBAs and executives at the University of Texas as well as Penn State and Harvard Business School.
The negotiation class looks at three dimensions of negotiation practice: First is table skills, techniques that are simultaneously non-confrontational and hard-nosed. Second is deal design. Complicated deals and long term relationships call for a contract. We discuss how to tailor contracts to common situations. Third is game shaping. Some of the most critical maneuvers in a negotiation, particularly in complex negotiations, go on away from the table. Negotiation is a practical skill, and the best way to learn a practical skill is hands-on experience. Much of the class revolves around a sequence of negotiation simulations. You learn by doing and by comparing your experience with those of your classmates.
Gary has written extensively on bargaining and business decision making, with articles published in business school, economics, philosophy, psychology, statistics and natural science journals. Gary received his Ph.D. from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. He has held visiting appointments at Harvard Business School, Cal Tech, the Max Planck Research Institute in Germany, the Institute of Economic Analysis in Barcelona, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, among other academic institutions. Gary lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife Elena Katok, their son Uriel, and a French bulldog named Orson.
Adjunct Professor, Operations Management
Nick Hassan has been a lecturer and adjunct professor in the Executive Education program at UT Dallas since 1998. Hassan’s 12 years of professional experience includes work at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab and Texas Instruments. He has held leadership positions in manufacturing, design, operations, project management, strategic program management and product development.
Jeff Hicks, PhD
Jeff Hicks is Clinical Professor in the Naveen Jindal School of Management, and Academic Director of The Leadership Center at UTD. Prior to his current appointments, Jeff was Vice President of Strategy for Adecco Solutions—a subsidiary of €25B Zurich-based Adecco Group, global lead of learning programs for the Organizational Strategy practice of IBM business consulting services, and Senior Manager with the Business Strategy practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers in San Francisco, Tokyo, Japan and Los Angeles. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Arts from California State University, a Master of International Management from Thunderbird, and a PhD in Organizational Studies from the University of Twente in The Netherlands.
Robert F. Hicks, PhD, is a Clinical Professor of Organizational Behavior at the University of Texas at Dallas and founding director of the Organizational Behavior and Executive Coaching program in the Naveen Jindal School of Management. Dr. Hicks is a licensed Psychologist and holds an appointment as Faculty Associate in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
His program at UT Dallas: 1) provides a graduate certificate and academic credit for individuals who wish to coach people in business settings either as an external coach, an internal coach, or as a coach leader; 2) provides and manages executive coaches for the benefit of the students enrolled in the UTD Executive MBA program; and 3) offers a Master of Science Degree in Management and Administrative Sciences with a concentration in Organizational Behavior and Coaching. Dr. Hicks also directs on-site MS/MBA degree programs with a concentration in healthcare organization leadership for academic medical centers and healthcare systems. He has three decades of experience teaching leadership and coaching skills to physicians and senior executives of both healthcare systems and Fortune 500 companies.
Dr. Hicks is a regular contributor of articles for physician executive publications and has recently written a book for Routledge Publishing, “Coaching as a Leadership Style: The art and science of coaching conversations for healthcare professionals (2013).
Surya Janakiraman is an Associate Professor of Accounting at The University of Texas at Dallas. He has a Ph.D in accounting from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Janakiraman also holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, M.B.A. from Indian Institute of Management and a master’s degree from University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining The University of Texas at Dallas, he taught at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Janakiraman’s non-academic work experience includes production responsibilities in an automobile-manufacturing firm, project management for a manufacturing company and management consulting with a leading accounting firm.
Dr.Janakiraman’s research interests include design and analysis of executive compensation contracts, performance measurement and evaluation, accounting information and capital markets, analysis of audit fee, cost behavior and cost management analysis. Dr. Janakiraman has published numerous research articles in the Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, European Journal of Operations Research, Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance, Journal of Productivity Analysis, Journal of Management Accounting Research and Managerial Finance. He has also authored a research monograph “Balanced scorecard: Linking strategy to performance” published by the research foundation of the Financial Executives International. He is in the editorial board of Journal of Management Accounting Research.
Robert Kieschnick, PhD
Finance and Managerial Economics
Dr. Robert Kieschnick will be team teaching financial management with Dr. Carolyn Reichert.
Dr. Kiechnick has a range of experiences both within industry and government: from oil & gas investment analysis to spectrum valuation.
Stephen L. Kiser, PhD
Stephen is a Regional Economist with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Division of Insurance and Research. Stephen has worked at the FDIC for over 15 years and has extensive experience identifying, monitoring, and addressing existing and emerging aggregate risks to the U.S. banking industry. Stephen has authored several articles that have appeared in the Journal of Cooperatives and the Journal of Agricultural Lending as well as numerous industry specific publications. Since 2009, Stephen has been teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate level courses at The University of Texas at Dallas. Also, Stephen is a guest speaker at many State and National industry conferences each year. His expertise and entertaining lecture style is often sought out by groups like the Independent Community Bankers Association, Farm Credit Administration, United States Department of Agriculture, and the New Mexico Association of Counties.
Diane McNulty, PhD
Ethical Corporate Governance and Board Expectations
Diane Seay McNulty, PhD, serves as UT Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management associate dean for external affairs and corporate development. Dr. McNulty assists the dean in creating strategic alliances and development initiatives, and she oversees all Jindal School corporate relationships. She administers the school’s advisory council and coordinates the school’s community agenda, civic projects and special events. She leads pr/marketing, advertising and promotional efforts. She created and is editor-in-chief of MANAGEMENT, a biannual publication of the Jindal School. She teaches at the undergraduate, graduate and Executive Education levels.
Dr. McNulty serves on the boards of directors of the Public Affairs Council in Washington, D.C.; Texas Business Hall of Fame and World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. She belongs to the Executive Women of Texas, Association of Fundraising Executives, Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations, Dallas Friday Group, Greater Dallas Chamber Committee on Technology and Healthcare/Business Development and the AACSB Communications Affinity Group.
B.P.S. Murthi, PhD
Dr. Murthi is a Professor of Marketing in the Naveen Jindal School of Management at The University of Texas at Dallas. He obtained his PhD from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh. His research uses quantitative analysis to address issues in consumer promotions, customer relationship management, and personalization on the Internet. His research has been published in top journals such as Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Business. He has served as the President of the E-Business Forum of INFORMS and has been the newsletter editor for ISMS, INFORMS for three years. He has also organized the Frank M. Bass conference at UTD for a number of years.
Michael Peng, PhD

Mike W. Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Strategy at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas, and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award winner.
Joseph Picken, PhD
Clinical Professor, Promoting Innovation
This course is organized around five topic areas. The nature of creativity and the context of innovation at the individual and organizational levels. The key processes of entrepreneurial innovation: the creation of value (for a customer) and the development of a process (business model) to earn a profit for the entrepreneur while delivering exceptional value to the customer. The nature of and strategies for overcoming the organizational barriers and constraints that exist in most organizations. The processes of design and design thinking that play an important role in many innovative organizations. The organizational processes and leadership skills required to create and sustain organizational innovation.
Carolyn Reichert, PhD
Finance and Managerial Economics
Dr. Carolyn Reichert is a Clinical Associate Professor for the Finance and Managerial Economics Department in the Jindal School of Management. She is also Director of the Master of Science in Finance Program. She worked in the insurance industry and teaches courses in financial management and advanced financial management. Her areas of interest include proxy contests, corporate control, real estate and working capital. She is a member of the Financial Management Association, the Midwest Finance Association and the Southern Finance Association. She earned a PhD from The Pennsylvania State University and has a BS in finance and a BA in mathematics from The Ohio State University.
John Wiorkowshi, PhD
Professor, Risk and Uncertainty
John Wiorkowski received his PhD in Statistics from the University of Chicago. He is the author of about 35 articles in applied statistics on topics ranging from forecasting the number of patients in a hospital to determining the takeoff time for the introduction of new products in a market.
In the past, John has consulted with Texas Instruments, American Airlines, Braniff Airlines, Republic National Bank, Frito-Lay, Dallas Morning News and the U.S. Department of Energy. He was also a member of the technical advisory board of Sipera Systems. He has been a speaker to the Richardson Chamber of Commerce, the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Richardson, Dallas and Highland Park School Districts.
John has been involved in University Administration for over twenty years. At present as well as being a Professor of Statistics, he is one of UTD’s vice provosts.
Habte G. Woldu, PhD
Dr. Woldu attended Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he pursued an undergraduate degree program education in social science while simultaneously working as an auditor in the Foreign Exchange Division of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. He earned a scholarship to attend higher education abroad, and decided to pursue a master’s degree program in human resource management and strategy in Poland. He further continued his education and earned a doctorate degree in Economics from the Poznan University of Economics (PUE) in Poland. Dr. Woldu’s past work experience include bank audit in the Foreign Exchange Division of Commercial Bank in Ethiopia, research consultancy for Building and Social Housing Foundation and International Center for Peace, London. After earning PhD in 1986, Dr. Woldu began his academic career as an Assistant professor at his alma mater PUE, Poland. After 3 years of teaching at PUE, Dr. Woldu and his family moved to Dallas where he worked as a consultant to Dallas-based business firms that were interested getting to the markets of Central and East European countries. He subsequently joined the School of Management (now JSOM) at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1993. While working for JSOM, Dr. Woldu taught at the St. Petersburg, State Polytechnic University Russia and the University of Vienna, Austria as a visiting professor.
Dr. Woldu has done extensive research and has a few publications in a wide breadth of areas, including in human resource management, East European economic transformation, determinants of African import and export, and the empirical assessment of cultural value dynamics in inter-countries and intra-demographic groups. with a focus on emerging economies. His academic teachings include international business management, human resource management, cross-cultural communication & management, and global business. Dr. Woldu has presented various research papers in many international academic annual conferences. Dr. Woldu is currently serving as an advisory board member and reviewer of the Poznan Economic Review Journal. Dr. Woldu also serves as reviewer of international academic research papers that are seeking an outlet to the Journal of International Business, International Journal of Human Recourse Management, Journal of Cross Cultural Management, Journal of Managerial Psychology and Thunderbird International Business Review.
During his 19-year work at the Jindal School of Management, Dr. Woldu has been actively involved in the internationalization of UTD. As the founder of foreign study trips and exchange programs in the JSOM, he has travelled to 20 countries with his students; he has been keenly interested in exposing UTD’s students to the global organizational and national cultures. Dr. Woldu is currently serving as the Director of International Management Programs, which include undergraduate Global Business and graduate International Management Studies programs. Dr. Woldu serves as an advisor to Global Business Organization at JSOM and East African Students’ Association at UTD. He is a member of the Advisory Council on International Education at UTD and the undergraduate committee in JSOM. He also serves as an advisor to various organizations, and institutions in the DFW area such as AISEC Dallas the DFW International Alliances.
