Information Systems Certificate Programs


Students may earn certifications in specialized areas of information systems by successfully completing the certificate requirements. The requirements typically include taking for-credit courses offered by the university, attending non-credit certificate programs and/or passing certification exams.

Certificate programs provide a great opportunity for working professionals who want to update their knowledge and skills and for students who want a competitive edge as they seek jobs. Students will be able to use or transfer the credit courses they take as part of the certificate program to a degree program if they pursue the degree option.

SAS-UT Dallas Data Mining and BI

The SAS Institute UT Dallas Graduate Certificate in Business Intelligence and Data Mining emphasizes theoretical concepts and clinical knowledge associated with the design, delivery and use of business intelligence and data mining techniques in organizations. This joint program with SAS Institute provides students with an opportunity to work with the latest technology, such as SAS Enterprise Miner, XL Miner and SAP Business Data Warehousing. Upon completion, the awarded certificate is signed by a representative from the SAS Institute and from the UT Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management.

The learning outcomes for the program include the following:

  • Develop a basic knowledge of business intelligence concepts and applications.
  • Learn statistical theories underpinning data mining methods.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of core business intelligence and data mining methods.
  • Apply business intelligence and data mining principles and techniques to solve business problems.

Required Courses

The following four courses are required:

  • OPRE 6301 Statistics and Data Analysis
  • MIS 6324 Business Analytics with SAS
  • MIS 6334 Advanced Business Analytics with SAS
  • MIS 6309 Business Data Warehousing (ITM Majors Only), OR
    MIS 6320 Database Foundations (non-ITM Majors Only)

Important Information

Current Students at UT Dallas already enrolled in a graduate degree program do not need to apply to the certificate program and may immediately register for certificate classes using the standard course registration process.

New Students who are not currently enrolled as a graduate student at UT Dallas must submit an application to be admitted as a non-degree seeking student. Please note that international students may not apply as non-degree seeking students.

Application Requirements:

  • Students must complete an online application. The application fee is $50 if it is received before the application deadline.
    • Select “Naveen Jindal School of Management”
    • Create an account through “First-Time Users” instructions
    • Select “Create a new graduate school application”
    • Select “Business Intelligence and Data Mining – Certificate”
    • Complete all required elements and submit application which then will be forwarded to the advising office as a non-degree seeking applicant for the certificate program

After Completion:

  • Once you have completed all requirements of the certificate program, please submit an application for the UT Dallas SAS Institute Certificate in Business Intelligence and Data Mining certificate. Please submit your application.

A special two-week SAP Certification Academy will be offered by SAP America & the University of Texas @ Dallas School of Management. SAP America will provide SAP Certified faculty to teach the SAP Certification training and administer the SAP Certification Exam.

Goals

The SAP Certification Academy will prepare you to:

  • Enhance your understanding of integration and system navigation in the SAP R/3 system.

Why

If you pass the certification exam at the end of the SAP Academy your name will be entered into the SAP database as a certified SAP consultant in mySAP ERP Integrated Business Processes.

Prerequisite

Students must complete either MIS6319 or ITSS4340 Intro to ERP in order to participate in the Academy. There are no exceptions to this SAP University Alliance Rule!

Cost

Cost $1,250 per student: Cost covers Certification Exam, Professional Instruction, and training materials. Payable to UTD in the form of Certified Check, or Money Order.

Healthcare IT

The graduate certificate in Healthcare IT emphasizes practical concepts and hands on experience gained using a electronic medical records (EMR) software such as Epic. The learning outcomes for the program include the following:

  • Identify and understand the key information requirements for managing and working with healthcare information systems.
  • Understand analytics related to healthcare information to develop sound healthcare decisions.
  • Understand the core functionalities of a leading EMR software platform, including how it supports clinical information workflows in a paperless environment, and its interconnectivity with other clinical and business systems.

The graduate healthcare IT certificate requires the completion of three courses (with a grade of B or better).

Required Courses


Students who have taken MIS 6324 during or prior to the 2013-14 academic year can count this course in lieu of HMGT 6334. However, starting with the 2014-15 academic year, students are required to take HMGT 6334 (instead of MIS 6324) to be eligible for the Certificate.

The courses are typically offered in the evenings to accommodate working professionals. HMGT 6323 is offered online as well as in the classroom, while the other two classes are offered only in the classroom.

Enterprise Systems

The graduate certificate in Enterprise Systems emphasizes theoretical concepts in enterprise resource planning experience using the SAP software. It provides broad exposure to various SAP functional modules such as sales and distribution, supply chain management, customer relationship management, procurement, human capital management, accounting and data warehousing. The program gives students an in-depth knowledge of two of these modules.

At the end of the program, students would be able to:

  • Identify the key integration points across various functional areas of large firms
  • Navigate SAP software and complete key business transactions
  • Gain deep knowledge in at least two functional and/or technical modules of SAP

Students completing this certificate program will also receive a “SAP Student Recognition Award” from SAP University Alliance and will also be eligible to attend the TERP10 SAP certification program at UT Dallas.

The enterprise systems certificate requires the completion of three courses (with a grade of B or better).

Certificate in Cybersecurity Systems (CCSS)

A joint Program of the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science and the Naveen Jindal School of Management.

The demand for improved cybersecurity education is a critical need in bolstering America’s future workforce. Today, the United States faces a deficit in the number of cybersecurity professionals, and predictions of the growing need are worrisome. Studies indicate a need for several hundred thousand new information security professionals within the next two years.

In addressing this growing critical demand, the Certificate in Cybersecurity Systems (CCSS) offered at UT Dallas provides a joint program between the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) and the Naveen Jindal School of Management (JSOM). The CCSS is an interdisciplinary program with two specialized tracks: emphasis in Computer Science and Cyber Security Management emphasis. Each track consists of one common course in Information Technology Security and three additional courses specific to the individual tracks, for a total of 12 semester credit hours.

Certificate in cybersecurity systems (CCSS) requires a total of 12 semester credit hours.

All students must successfully complete:

Students will select a track and three more courses within the selected track.

Computer Science Emphasis

  • CS 6348 Data and Applications Security
  • One course from a list of existing cyber security systems Computer Science courses (offered periodically, and must be approved)

Cyber Security Management Emphasis
