Biography
Founder and Academic Director – The Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Clinical Professor - Organizations, Strategy & International Management

Dr. Picken has been a member of the faculty of the Naveen Jindal School of Management at The University of Texas at Dallas since 2001. He is a Clinical Professor and the Founder and former Executive Director of the Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at UT Dallas (IIE). Until August 2014, he also served as the Director of Programs in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He currently teaches undergraduate, graduate and Executive MBA courses in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity, and Leadership. Previously, he also taught courses in Strategic Management and Organizational Behavior.  

Over the past fifteen years, Dr. Picken, and his colleagues have built a leading academic program in innovation and entrepreneurship with more than 1,200 students enrolled annually in 19 graduate and 10 undergraduate courses. In 2016, this program was ranked by the Princeton Review as the 22nd best graduate program in the nation.  

In January 2014, UT Dallas’ Master of Science in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MSIE) program was recognized by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) as the National Model Master’s Program. The academic program was also recognized in 2014 by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC), an organization of entrepreneurship programs around the world, for “excellence in entrepreneurship teaching and pedagogical innovation.” In 2009, UT Dallas was recognized by the GCEC for “outstanding contributions to advance the discipline of entrepreneurship.” In 2008, UT Dallas and the IIE received the Tech Titan Technology Advocate award for its leadership in the North Texas community.

Dr. Picken is a past member of the Board of Directors of USASBE and serves as an advisor for the Dallas Entrepreneur Center and a mentor for the RevTech accelerator in Dallas. He is a former member of the North Texas Angel Network. Dr. Picken was the Founding Executive Director of the Texas University Network for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, an organization of 24 Texas institutions of higher learning.

Dr. Picken holds an AB in Economics from Dartmouth College, an MBA in Finance and Accounting from The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma academic honorary society.

Prior to joining UT Dallas, Picken taught for several years at Southern Methodist University and enjoyed a 30-year business and consulting career. He has served as CFO of major operating units of several Fortune 200 corporations, held CEO/COO positions in two NASDAQ companies, and has been involved in two IPOs and several successful corporate turnarounds. He is the co-author of two books and has published numerous articles in trade and professional journals.

Dr. Picken has also headed his own management consulting firm since 1986. Joseph C. Picken & Associates provides strategy, marketing, operations management and turnaround management consulting services to firms across a broad range of manufacturing and service industries. Over the past 30 years, the firm has successfully completed more than 90 consulting engagements for more than 70 clients.

Dr. Picken is married to Marcia Messinger and resides in Dallas, Texas.
