Product Release Story Mapping Workshop

This interactive presentation and hands-on workshop teaches participants how to build on a product vision or idea with story mapping. This approach ensures a shared understanding of a product’s vision and develops the product roadmap, which serves as the basis for development while progressively solving problems that product users might have. Steps include identifying what product users need, developing the project backlog in the form of a story map, and defining and planning the initial and subsequent releases of the product. Participants gain valuable insight into a product’s story mapping and release planning processes by using a real-world example. This session answers the following and related questions:

  • What is the best way to move a product idea forward and make progress on a backlog?
  • What is a story map?
  • How do you develop a story map?
  • What factors should you consider while developing a story map?
  • How do you use story mapping in product-release planning?
  • How can you make a story map work for you?

Sherry James, PMP
Sherry James, PMP, is currently building an EMPO at HollyFrontier Corp. in Dallas. She has extensive experience across a broad spectrum of industries which include retail, telecommunications, business intelligence/big data, software development and healthcare. Since 2000, she has worked as an executive coach and consultant creating leadership curriculum for organizations large and small. Her passion for mentoring millennials has taken her around the country in the last few years, speaking on topics that will bring together multiple generations around projects and programs that are beneficial to all involved.

Sherry has experience managing strategic programs in employee engagement, application development, portals and collaboration, enterprise social, and gamification. In 2012, she was director of the project management organization at Fort Worth-based Buxton Co., where she managed the end-to-end development of the current PMO. She also has served as training/project manager at 7-Eleven and AT&T. A member of the Project Management Institute since 2009, Sherry has held various leadership roles for the Dallas PMI chapter. She is currently vice president of professional development, managing several teams responsible for developing and facilitating classes, courses and workshops dedicated to leadership and soft skill development. In addition to her work providing executive coaching support to C-level executives, she is actively engaged in the speakers’ circuit on topics related to leadership, communication and team development. Sherry is married and has two children — a 26-year-old registered nurse and a basketball-obsessed second grader.
