Recently, on my recommendation, the Executive Education Committee of the Naveen Jindal School of Management’s faculty adopted a revised curriculum for the Executive MBA program. This was a curriculum developed by an earlier curriculum review committee. The new curriculum has incorporated my views of the components necessary in a strong Executive MBA program today. Importantly, it also reflects inputs from a large number of school insiders and from outsiders as well. I want to add that the faculty vote was unanimous. Your school has taken the position to design and deliver the best curriculum we can. It will go into effect with classes starting in August this year.
So, what is in the curriculum? Is it vastly different from one that past and present classes have experienced? No, it is not vastly different. Nevertheless, it does reflect areas where faculty felt adjustments and refinements were in order. Structural components might be considered to be the program’s building blocks. These are:
- A continuing emphasis on strategic frameworks and how to address the evolving marketplace.
- A new emphasis on Big Data and the associated implications for management action. A new three-hour course will replace IT Management. The program will also see the addition of a one-hour course in social media (real time) marketing and online marketing.
- A continuing emphasis on interpersonal and international perspectives. This will result in the addition of a three-hour course in C-suite leadership that will deal with such topics as influencing public policy, ethics and how to best be the face of the company.
- A renewed emphasis on timely integration of the above topics. This will be accomplished through a field-based enterprise transformation class led by a mix of academic and executive corporate leaders.
Other changes include one-hour credit courses in contracts, negotiations, supply chain management and innovation, and a repositioning of the field trips taken in the first and second years. The “Americas” trip is the shorter version that will focus on policy, geography or industry. A continuation of the emphasis on coaching remains. Coaching is required for semesters one through three and optional in semesters four and five.
The above represents structural elements. To the student, the program will appear as development of linked themes as the program unfolds. The themes are:
- Addressing Global Markets
- Effective Leadership
- Managing Investments for Value
- Personal Development
I invite any inquiries about our new curriculum. While we have made these changes after much consultation with academics, business leaders, alumni and students, we remain open to program modification. We expect some continue change. In summary, I must say I am optimistic that great results will follow from these efforts.

The Class of 2013
In early April, Dr. Springate, Dr. McNulty, Connie Imhoff and I accompanied the Class of 2013 to Taipei, Taiwan, and Beijing, China, for the international study trip. We had great company visits with Taiwan Semiconductor, Delta Electronics, the Bank of China, Stanley, Black & Decker and others. One of the greatest highlights for me was our farewell dinner at Quanjade Peking Duck Restaurant. We were entertained with a number of performances during our Peking duck dinner. Afterward, each student expressed the impact the trip (or the program) has had on him or her individually. It was quite memorable, as was walking the Great Wall the following day.

The Class of 2014
David Turano (2013) passed the Springate Cup on to the Lalin Sourjah (2014). The event was held right after lunch on April 27 with both classes, a prospective student and Dr. Springate in attendance. Dr. Springate shared with both classes how Doug Gordon (1994) in the first UT Dallas Executive MBA program began the Springate Cup tradition. The original Springate Cup was a mug that Doug brought back from Ireland, and it has since been replaced with the Springate Cup you see in the picture below of David (left), Lalin (center) and Dr. Springate.

Terri Maxwell (2004) was the guest speaker for our second Emerging Women Leaders event. She spoke briefing about her new book that she recently co-wrote with classmate Tim Houlne (2004).The New World of Work: From the Cube to the Cloud (Inspire on Purpose Books, 2013). Her message centered around three key themes:
- You get what you focus on. (Don’t focus on the obstacles, but on your end goal.)
- You get what you give. (The more you give, the more you get.)
- Always expect more. (Raise your own bar.)

UT Dallas celebrated the official groundbreaking of our 110,000 square-foot addition to the Jindal School of Management facility which is anticipated to be open at the late fall of 2014.
